Bye Bye SXSW

Today’s our last day at SXSW interactive and this week has gone by FAST. I’m hitting the road back to Houston tonight with plenty of lessons learned and great information to bring back to our agency and clients alike.

A few things I learned:

  • In order to build a celebrity brand (or really, any brand) online, your brand must stay true to it’s authentic self.
  • There are currently 38,000,000 charity asks online each year.  That’s a lot of folks competing for fundraising dollars!
  • In order to find a Return On Investment for social media, you have to first know your goals.  If your goals include community building and engagement, than you can absolutely say, yes, there is an ROI in social media.
  • There’s no hiding things on the internet.  If your brand or (person) is willing to be online, you must be honest and transparent.

For more lessons learned from the whole team, be sure to read back through the blog!

SXSW Is Wet, Hectic and PACKED.

That’s right people, it’s our second day at SXSW and it’s STILL pouring.  Perhaps, we should’ve paid better attention to the weather.  Regardless, we’re all drenched, cold and bundled together, ready to learn.  Because of the rain, people are desperate to get on shuttles and then find their way indoors.

I was supposed to be at a panel about branding, but unfortunately it was at capacity, something I’ve heard a lot of yesterday and now, today.  Instead, I’m at LEAN STARTUP, hopefully to learn a thing or two about start ups, since we have worked with start up businesses and will continue to do so.

Cheers to learning!

What We’re Learning: The Future of Lifestyle Media

Jessie, Jenny and Stephanie here at “The Future of Lifestyle Media” panel (our first one of the week) and we’re learning A LOT! This panel features Camille Styles of Camillestyles.com, Andrew Wagner of Krrb, Grace Bonney of Design Sponge and Tolly Moseley of Austin Eavesdropper

A few things we’ve found interesting and/or appreciated hearing thus far:

  • When blogging: BE the SOURCE, or, rather, be the place where content is created and continuously focus on solid content.
  • Part of being a good producer of content is knowing when to stop and what’s important to say.
  • In media or when blogging: don’t try to fake it or own a voice that isn’t yours. Use your own, REAL, voice.
  • With different social media tools (Pinterest and more): be strategic and know when and where to use those tools and choose which tools to use based on this strategy.
  • Be yourself. If one social media channel works best for you or feels most comfortable, use that and stick with it.  Don’t use tools that don’t allow you to be yourself or represent your voice.

I’m seriously PUMPED for this panel! Rainn Wilson is one of my absolute favorite comedians (see IPR blog for proof) and browsing his site, Soul Pancake, is something you’ll find me doing often! I’m hoping Rainn will help me wrangle my own creative juices and develop more exciting content!

Trending 2012 - What will come out on top?

This video from SXSW 2011 shows that Group Messaging took the conference by storm. This panel on Friday, March 9th is presented by Joel Simkhai founder/CEO of Blendr and Grindr will discuss location based applications. Do you think these will be the hot topics of conversation this year?

SXSW Survival Guide

Today’s IntegratePR blog has lots of tips for vets and newbies!

Absolutely cannot wait for The Cloud Lounge sponsored by HP. Not only because Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. will be performing, but because it will be at The Belmont Austin. It’s one of our favorite venues - plus we can’t get enough of those Belmontinis!

Anyone else excited to go?
